How to Read Your Numerology
A complete guide to numerology, from what the seven numbers of a reading mean to exactly how each one is worked out from your name and birth date and how to read every part of your results page.
What Is Numerology?
Numerology reads meaning into numbers taken from two things you carry all your life, your birth date and your name. Every letter of the alphabet stands for a number from 1 to 9, and every total is added digit by digit until one digit is left. A reading gives you a handful of such numbers, each tied to one part of your life, and a description of what each number stands for.
The date is fixed, so the numbers it gives speak to your direction and your timing. The name was given to you and can change, so the numbers it gives speak to your talents, your wishes and the way you come across. Read together, they make a small map of a life in numbers.
Where It Comes From
The idea that numbers carry meaning is very old. Pythagoras, the Greek thinker of the sixth century BCE, taught that number orders the world, and many traditions since have read signs in figures, from Hebrew gematria to Chinese lucky numbers.
The system most books use today is much younger. Its letter chart took shape in the early twentieth century, when Mrs. L. Dow Balliett published her books on the meaning of numbers from 1908, and later teachers built the core numbers on it. It is called Pythagorean in his honour, not because he wrote it. The names of the numbers still differ from book to book. The Life Path is also called the Birth Path, the Destiny the Expression, and the Inner Guidance the Maturity number. GnosisWay gives each number one name.
Pythagorean and Chaldean
A second system, the Chaldean, gives letters values from 1 to 8 by their sound and reads a name differently, so the same name can give different numbers in each. GnosisWay uses the Pythagorean system throughout, and every number on your results page shows how it was reached, so you can check it by hand.
What It Is and What It Is Not
- A symbolic tradition, not a science. There is no scientific evidence that a name or a birth date shapes personality or foretells events. The arithmetic is exact, but the meanings given to each number come from tradition, not from study.
- A prompt for reflection, not a forecast. Read each description as a question to put to yourself. Keep what you recognise and let go of what does not fit.
- Shared, not unique. Everyone born on the same day shares a Life Path and a Birthday, and countless people share any one number. It is the full set, with the numbers from your name, that is your own.
- Not a test. The MBTI and Enneagram tests on GnosisWay measure how you answer. Numerology measures nothing about you. It works out numbers from facts you give it, so the same name and date always give the same reading.
How Your Numbers Are Calculated
This part describes exactly how GnosisWay works out your reading, the classic way most numerology books teach. Your results page shows the same working for each of your numbers, so you can follow every step with your own name and date.
The Letter Chart
Each letter counts as a number from 1 to 9. The alphabet is written out in rows of nine, so A is 1, B is 2 and so on to I, which is 9, and the count starts again at J and again at S.
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AJS | BKT | CLU | DMV | ENW | FOX | GPY | HQZ | IR |
Reducing to One Digit
Every total is reduced by adding its digits until one digit is left. 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0, which is 19, then 1 + 9, which is 10, then 1 + 0, which is 1. Your results page writes this as 1990 → 19 → 10 → 1.
Keeping Master Numbers
Three totals are not reduced. 11, 22 and 33 are master numbers and are kept whole wherever a reduction reaches them, in the middle of a sum as well as at its end. Every other total carries on down to one digit. Some books treat 44 and higher doubles as master numbers too. GnosisWay follows the more common practice and reduces them, so 44 becomes 8.
The Life Path
The month, the day and the year of your birth are each reduced first, then added together, and the sum is reduced again. Reducing each part on its own is what lets a master number appear, and it is the main reason one site's Life Path can differ from another's.
Worked example
Born on 9 November 2000. The month 11 is a master number and stays 11. The day is 9. The year 2000 reduces to 2. Then 11 + 9 + 2 is 22, a master number, so the Life Path is 22.
Adding every digit of the date at once, 1 + 1 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 0, gives 13 and then 4, which is why a site that works that way shows a Life Path of 4 for the same date.
Destiny, Soul Urge and Personality
Three numbers come from your name, and each is worked out the same way. Each word of the name is added up and reduced on its own, then the words are added together and the sum is reduced again.
- Destiny counts every letter.
- Soul Urge counts only the vowels.
- Personality counts only the consonants.
Worked example
Sarah Johnson. SARAH is 1 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 8, which is 20 and reduces to 2. JOHNSON is 1 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 5, which is 32 and reduces to 5. So the Destiny is 2 + 5, which is 7.
The vowels alone give 2 for SARAH and 12, then 3, for JOHNSON, so the Soul Urge is 5. The consonants alone give 18, then 9, and 20, then 2, so the Personality is 9 + 2, which is 11, a master number kept whole.
Vowels, Y and W
A, E, I, O and U are always vowels. Y is a vowel when it sounds like one, as in Mary or Lynn, and a consonant when a vowel follows it in the same word, as in Maya or Yolanda. W always counts as a consonant. Books differ on both letters, and this is the rule GnosisWay applies to every name.
Inner Guidance, Birthday and Personal Year
- Inner Guidance is your Life Path and your Destiny added together and reduced. Sarah Johnson, born on 15 July 1990, has a Life Path of 5 and a Destiny of 7, so 5 + 7 is 12, which gives an Inner Guidance of 3. Many books call this the Maturity number.
- Birthday is the day of the month you were born, reduced. The 18th gives 9. The 11th and the 22nd give the master numbers 11 and 22, and the 29th gives 11.
- Personal Year is your birth month and day with the current year, each reduced, then added and reduced. For a birthday on 15 July in 2026 that is 7 + 6 + 1, which is 14 and gives 5. A year is one step of a cycle of nine, so the Personal Year always reduces to 1 to 9, with no master numbers, and it moves on every 1 January.
Names in Other Alphabets
The letter chart is written for the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, so a name is first spelled in plain Latin letters. Accents come off, so José is counted as Jose and Müller as Muller, and a few letters are spelled out, so ß becomes ss. A Cyrillic name is spelled the way a passport usually spells it, so Мария is counted as Mariya and Юлия as Yuliya. When the spelling counted differs from the name you typed, the form and your results page show it.
Letters from other scripts, such as Chinese or Arabic, have no place on the chart, so the form asks for the name in Latin or Cyrillic letters.
Which Name to Enter
Enter your full name as it was given at birth, every first, middle and last name, spelled as it was registered. Every letter counts, so a middle name left out or a nickname typed instead gives different name numbers. Many numerologists read the birth name for the core numbers and treat a later name, such as a married name, as an added influence. To look at a later name's numbers, use View someone else's reading, so your own reading stays as it is.
The Seven Numbers
A reading on GnosisWay gives seven numbers. Three come from your birth date, three from your name, and one from both.
From Your Birth Date
- Life Path. The main number of a reading and the one to read first. It speaks to the direction of your life and the lessons it keeps bringing.
- Birthday. The day you were born. It speaks to a talent that comes naturally to you.
- Personal Year. Your place in a cycle of nine years. It speaks to the theme of the current year and changes every January.
From Your Name
- Destiny. Every letter of your name. It speaks to your talents and what you are here to build with them.
- Soul Urge. The vowels. It speaks to what you want deep down, the motive under what you do.
- Personality. The consonants. It speaks to the way others see you before they know you well.
Where They Meet
Inner Guidance adds your Life Path to your Destiny. GnosisWay reads it as the way you meet problems and make decisions. Many numerologists call it the Maturity number and read it as a theme that grows stronger in the second half of life.
What Each Number Means
Each of the nine digits has a character of its own, and a number reads that character into the part of life it stands for. A 7 as a Life Path is a path of study and depth, and a 7 as a Personality is a reserved, thoughtful first impression.
- 1. Independence, initiative and leadership. Its gift is beginning things. Its shadow is going it alone or pushing too hard.
- 2. Cooperation, sensitivity and patience. Its gift is partnership and tact. Its shadow is indecision and pleasing others at its own cost.
- 3. Expression, creativity and joy. Its gift is words and imagination. Its shadow is scattered energy and staying on the surface.
- 4. Structure, work and reliability. Its gift is building what lasts. Its shadow is rigidity and seeing the fence instead of the view.
- 5. Freedom, change and experience. Its gift is adaptability. Its shadow is restlessness and excess.
- 6. Responsibility, care and home. Its gift is service and a feel for beauty. Its shadow is control that passes for care.
- 7. Analysis, depth and solitude. Its gift is insight. Its shadow is withdrawal and cold distrust.
- 8. Ambition, authority and the material world. Its gift is running things well. Its shadow is control and measuring worth by results.
- 9. Compassion, completion and the wide view. Its gift is generosity. Its shadow is holding on to old hurts or giving itself away.
The Master Numbers
- 11. The 2 at a higher pitch. Intuition, inspiration and a finely tuned nervous system.
- 22. The 4 at a higher pitch. Turning a large vision into something built and lasting.
- 33. The 6 at a higher pitch. Care and teaching on a wide scale. It is the rarest of the three.
Tradition holds that a master number is demanding, and that many people live its base number first and grow into the master later. That is why a master number on your results page also shows the traits of its base number.
Karmic Lessons
A number from 1 to 9 that no letter of your name carries is called a karmic lesson. Numerologists read it as a quality that does not come by itself and that life keeps inviting you to build. A name without a single 7, for example, points to depth and reflection as something to practise.
Read the count with care. A short name leaves out more numbers than a long one, so the number of karmic lessons says as much about the length of a name as about its owner.
The Number Map
Your results page draws your whole reading as one picture, the number map. The letters of your name run along the top, your birth date runs along the bottom, and your seven numbers sit between them, joined by the lines that make them. Here is the map for Sarah Johnson, born on 15 July 1990, the example used throughout this guide. Tap any number or letter on it, as you can on your own.
- Life Path 5
- Destiny 7
- Soul Urge 5
- Personality 11
- Inner Guidance 3
- Birthday 6
- Personal Year 5
Tap a number or a letter to see how it is counted
- A vowel, counted in your Soul Urge
- A consonant, counted in your Personality
- A master number, kept whole
- The current year, which turns your Personal Year every January
How the Map Is Built
- Your name, letter by letter. The name is spelled in Latin letters and laid out along the top, word by word. Above each letter is the number it counts as.
- Three numbers from the name. Each vowel sends a line to the Soul Urge on the left, each consonant to the Personality on the right, and the whole name sends one line down to the Destiny in the middle. Each of the three is its letters added word by word and reduced.
- Three numbers from the date. Your birth date is laid out along the bottom. The month, the day and the year send lines up to the Life Path, the day alone to the Birthday, and the month and the day with the current year to the Personal Year.
- Where the two meet. The Destiny from above and the Life Path from below meet in the Inner Guidance, at the centre of the map.
Every line is one step of the arithmetic described in How Your Numbers Are Calculated, and tapping a number shows that number's working step by step. In Sarah's map, the four rose lines from A, A, O and O lead to a Soul Urge of 5, the consonants lead to a Personality of 11, ringed as a master number, and her Destiny of 7 and Life Path of 5 meet in an Inner Guidance of 3.
What Each Mark Means
| Rose circle. A vowel of your name, A, E, I, O or U, or a Y that sounds as a vowel. It counts in your Soul Urge and your Destiny. | |
| White circle. A consonant of your name. It counts in your Personality and your Destiny. | |
| Small number above a letter. The number the letter counts as, from the letter chart, so A and J and S are 1. | |
| Rose line. A vowel on its way to your Soul Urge. | |
| Grey line from a letter. A consonant on its way to your Personality. | |
| Line down from the name. Every letter of the name together, which makes your Destiny. | |
| Large circle. One of your seven numbers, with its name beside it. | |
| Second rose ring. A master number, 11, 22 or 33, kept whole instead of reduced. | |
| Pill along the bottom. The month, the day or the year of your birth, as written. Lines run from them to your Life Path, and from the day to your Birthday. | |
| Dashed pill. The current year, the one part of the map that changes on its own. | |
| Dashed line. The month, the day and the current year on their way to your Personal Year, which is why it moves every January. | |
| Gold ring and gold lines. What you tapped, and the lines that make it. Everything else fades back. | |
| Question mark. A number the form cannot work out yet, while you are still typing. |
Why a Map
- Your numbers are worked out, not measured. A test like the MBTI measures how far you lean each way, so its chart plots percentages. Numerology has no scores to plot. What is true of each number is where it comes from, so that is what the map draws.
- Name above, date below. The tradition reads the name, which was given to you and can change, as your talents and the way you come across, and the date, which never changes, as your path and your timing. The map keeps the two apart and shows where they meet.
- It shows what moves together. Spell your name differently and the Soul Urge or the Personality changes, then the Destiny, then the Inner Guidance, while the Life Path stays put. Another birth date leaves the three name numbers alone. A list of seven numbers cannot show that, and the map shows it in its lines.
- You can check every number. Nothing is hidden behind the drawing. Each line is a step you can follow by hand with the letter chart.
- It is numerology's own shape. A circle of nine points would look like the Enneagram's chart, which measures something else entirely. The map is drawn for this system alone.
Reading Your Results
Your results page shows your reading in layers, from the number map described above down to what each number means. On a phone the map comes first, and on a larger screen it stays beside the reading as you scroll.
Numbers in Your Name
Under the map, a row of nine thin bars counts how many letters of your name carry each number from 1 to 9. A number with no bar is one no letter carries, and the line below names these as your karmic lessons. Under that, a line gives the name and date the reading is for and, when it differs, the Latin spelling that was counted.
Core Numbers
The first tab holds one card for each of the seven numbers, in the order Life Path, Destiny, Soul Urge, Personality, Inner Guidance, Birthday and Personal Year. Each card opens with your own working, the same steps described in this guide, and then what the number means in that place.
- The description. A title, an overview and a part written for that place, such as Key Strengths and Growth Areas for the Life Path, Deepest Desires for the Soul Urge, or this year's theme for the Personal Year, with an affirmation.
- The traits. Under the description, the number at its best and the habits to watch for. The Birthday card has no description, only its natural talents and what to watch for.
- Master numbers. A card holding 11, 22 or 33 says so first, with what that master number asks of you, and then reads its base number, 2, 4 or 6. On the map the same number has a second rose ring.
Name Energy
- Karmic Lesson Numbers. Each number your name leaves out, with what it invites you to build. A name that carries all nine says so instead.
- Repeated Letters. Letters that appear more than once, with their number and a short meaning.
- First and Last Letter. The letter your name starts with and the one it ends with, which numerologists read as how you begin and how you finish things.
The Menu
The ⋯ button beside the heading Layered insights in order opens a menu with Guide, which brings you to this page, Update data, which reworks the reading with a corrected name or date, and View someone else's reading, which opens a blank form for another person.
Signing In and Saving
Anyone can see a reading. Signed out, the Core Numbers tab is open and the Name Energy tab is blurred until you sign in. Signed in, everything is open.
Your reading is saved to your account when you make it from the form or with Update data while signed in, and also when you make it signed out, sign in and come back to it on the same device. It then joins your other systems in your Atlas. A reading opened from a link, and any reading made with View someone else's reading, is shown to you and never replaces your own.
If your numerology is part of a paid Gnosis Synthesis, a new reading moves that synthesis to your archive, where it stays readable in My Purchases, and a new synthesis is needed to bring in the new numbers.
Getting the Most From Your Reading
- Start with the Life Path, then the name. The Life Path is the main number. Read it first, then the Destiny, Soul Urge and Personality, and see where they agree and where they pull apart.
- Read the tension, not just the numbers. A Soul Urge and a Personality far apart, such as a 7 inside and a 3 outside, often describe a gap between what you want and how you come across. That gap is often the most useful part of a reading.
- Use the Personal Year as a theme, not a forecast. A 1 year invites starting things and a 9 year invites finishing them. Let the theme frame your plans and leave the decisions to you.
- Check it against what you know. Numerology describes you from your name and date alone. Compare it with what the MBTI and Enneagram tests found, which come from your own answers, and with what people close to you see.
- Keep what fits. Treat every description as a question. If a line rings true, it is worth thinking about. If it does not, nothing about you is wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about numerology and the GnosisWay reading.
Usually because the other site adds every digit of the date at once instead of reducing the month, the day and the year one by one. Both reach the same single digit most of the time, but only the classic way keeps a master number that appears along the way. Born on 9 November 2000, the classic way gives 22 and adding every digit gives 4. Your results page shows each step, so you can check it by hand.
Your full name as it was given at birth, with every first, middle and last name, spelled as it was registered. Every letter counts, so a nickname or a name left out gives different name numbers. To look at a later name, such as a married name, use View someone else’s reading, which keeps your own reading as it is.
The letter chart is written for the Latin alphabet, so a name is first spelled in plain Latin letters. Accents come off, so José is counted as Jose, and a Cyrillic name is spelled the way a passport usually spells it, so Мария is counted as Mariya. When the spelling counted differs from the name you typed, the page shows it.
When it sounds like one. Y is a vowel in Mary or Lynn and a consonant when a vowel follows it in the same word, as in Maya or Yolanda. W always counts as a consonant. Books differ on both letters, and GnosisWay applies this one rule to every name.
11, 22 and 33 are master numbers. They are kept whole wherever a reduction reaches them, and tradition reads them as a higher pitch of 2, 4 and 6. Some books also count 44 and higher doubles as master numbers. GnosisWay follows the more common practice and reduces them, so 44 becomes 8.
A karmic lesson is a number from 1 to 9 that no letter of your name carries, read as a quality life invites you to build. Your page lists them. Some books also read karmic debt numbers, 13, 14, 16 and 19, when they turn up as a total before the last reduction. Books disagree on where to look for them, and GnosisWay does not calculate them.
Every 1 January. It is worked out from your birth month and day with the current year, so it moves one step along a cycle of nine each new year, from 1 for beginnings to 9 for endings.
No. There is no scientific evidence that a name or a birth date shapes personality or predicts events. The arithmetic is exact, but the meanings come from tradition. Many people still find it a useful prompt for reflection, and that is how GnosisWay presents it.
Yes, when you are signed in and make it from the form or with Update data, or when you make it signed out and come back to it after signing in on the same device. A reading opened from someone’s link is shown to you but never replaces your own.
